CCPN's Prevention Services provide a multi-faceted approach to prevention. First, any contraband is found and removed. Then children are taught skills proven to prevent self-defeating choices. Accurate drug prevention information is provided in a variety of formats to support individuals, parents, and the community as a whole.

The Dogs Against Drugs Program is both a detection program and a student support program. Therapeutically trained and nationally certified detection canines promote the well being of students by keeping their schools gun and drug free. The program also helps deter off-campus abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Most schools will benefit the most by combining the DAD detection program with the Positive Alternatives education program.

The Positive Alternatives Drug Prevention Education curriculum teaches more than "just say no" to students. It teaches drug resistance skills by directly addressing the factors promoting drug abuse, such as peer pressure, poor self esteem, and personal safety. A small group classroom based format is used.

The Challenge Program is a universal life-skills training program that teaches personal and social skills. It also provides drug resistance and self-management skills through a curriculum-based support group format.

The Prevention Resource Center is located in Athens,Texas. It houses a wide variety of up-to-date, no-cost prevention and educational materials such as brochures, booklets, books, activity materials and videos.

The Children's Help Line is designed to give children an anonymous, non-threatening opportunity to vent their fears and frustrations. The Help Line is manned during regular business hours -- there is always someone to listen.

The Parent to Parent Program is designed to present information about local drug abuse trends, concerns, and identification of signs and symptoms of such abuse.  It is presented in a small group, "home party" format.

Community Presentations are provided to civic groups, church groups, service clubs and youth organizations. A variety of pertinent topics are available for a 15- to 60- minute presentation, and a drug dog demonstration is provided upon request.

Children often feel that no one understands some of the issues they face....The main focus of the Children's Help line is to let children know that there are adults available to help them.

Evaluation of Programs and Services

Our programs and services are based on an assessment of data about the drug and violence problems in the schools and communities we serve. The science-based curricula are based on the Prevention Principles of Effectiveness and are directed by a Texas Certified Prevention Specialist.

Research and periodic evaluations show that our programs prevent or reduce drug abuse, violence, or disruptive behavior.  These evaluations are used to refine, improve, and strengthen our programs.  Assessment of each client's needs is performed prior to implementation of services and again at the end of the program or school year.

Our educational programs have evaluation tools to be used by classroom teachers, secondary students and administrators. Pre-and post-testing is also used to assess the level of student learning.

Student attitudes toward the DAD dogs and CCPN representatives are overwhelmingly positive. In addition, CCPN actively solicits client feedback in order to provide the best possible service in meeting individual client needs. Because excellence is our goal, CCPN incorporates separate, formal school administrator evaluation of both search and education services and student and teacher evaluations of individual classroom presentations.

The following is a sampling from year-end evaluations:

Prevention/Intervention Campus Inspection Service Administrator Evaluations:
 · 89% of administrators state that the Dogs Against Drugs program has reduced discipline problems;
· 91% - discouraged attitudes and behaviors associated with alcohol/drug use;
· 92% - promoted support among students of chemical-free lifestyles; and
· 93% - increased a feeling of safety among faculty and students.

Prevention/Intervention Education Service Administrator Evaluations:
· 93% of administrators state the Positive Alternatives Curriculum has encouraged students to reach out for help;
· 98% - issues presented are relevant to students' needs and offers specific alternatives for healthy self-growth;
· 99% - subject matter is both applicable and age appropriate;
· 99% - helps students understand they are not alone in their problems; and
· 99% - promotes support among students of a drug-free lifestyle.

Prevention/Intervention Education Service Teacher Evaluations:
· 97% - of teachers gave Positive Alternatives Curriculum presentations an overall rating of excellent or outstanding
· 92% - rated presentations of more value compared to other available materials or programs.

The outcome evaluations from teachers is overwhelmingly positive, and we receive many notes of thanks and appreciation. Overall, our impact on schools and the community continues to present a very positive picture.
